Just a short walk from Oga Station, the Ine to Agave Brewery is located on the banks of the Funakawa Port, which once flourished as a major trade hub. Our building repurposes a 90 year old station building that is still a symbol of Oga. By retaining the original features, we are keeping the memories of the local people alive.
We produce nihonshu (the legal term for Japanese sake made from domestic rice) exclusively for export overseas, in accordance with current Japanese law. For the domestic market in Japan, we produce doburoku, which can be made with a brewing licence for “other brewed sake”, and craft sake, which is made in much the same way as nihonshu, but with agave syrup.
Since our aim is to revitalise Oga as a tourist destination, we are also working on projects that go beyond brewing sake. Tsuchi to Kaze, a restaurant attached to the brewery, has been opened to become a base for tourists. During the day it functions as a cafe, serving snacks and light meals such as soft-serve ice cream made from sake lees, making it a relaxing place for families to visit. Visitors can also enjoy an original coffee blend roasted for us by Satoyama Design, a group that protects Akita’s mountains by cultivating abandoned land.
In the evenings, young Italian and French chefs offer a special special sit-down meal. We employ two chefs on a monthly basis to encourage interaction with the local farmers during the months they are off. They express the thoughts and stories they learn through live communication on the plate.
In addition to this, we are currently working on a project to open an auberge in Oga. In order to promote tourism in Akita and Oga, it is essential to create a hotel that captures the spirit of the region. The team members on the project are some of the most creative designers and artists in Japan. They will reuse a historic local mansion and put their soul and skills into the exterior and interior design. Of course, the onsite restaurant will offer a unique brewery dining experience, with courses paired with craft sake. Our mission is to create an auberge that people from all over the world will dream of visiting at least once in their lives.
